Tyler Palmer, Founder

Tyler founded GreenMountain Engineering in 2003 and skillfully grew the company from just two engineers at the outset to 20 employees, two offices and over 60 projects per year by 2008. An unusually gifted manager, Tyler surrounded himself with individuals who share his passions for technical innovation and the environment and created an organization that will continue to thrive as his legacy. Prior to establishing GreenMountain, Tyler built and directed the mechanical engineering department at Signature BioScience, developed patented technologies with Space Systems Loral and NASA, and completed a master’s degree in aerospace engineering at the University of Colorado. Tyler also co-founded the San Francisco Professionals Chapter of Engineers Without Borders-USA and was instrumental in establishing the West Coast Region governing body of the organization.

Chris Cortez, President

Chris co-founded GreenMountain in 2003 and oversaw the growth and development of the firm's engineering staff before becoming President. An accomplished project manager and design engineer, Chris has extensive first-hand experience with the challenges of cleantech and biomedical technology development. He has led projects including automated manufacturing equipment, solar module design, and medical devices of all shapes and sizes. Chris received his degree in mechanical engineering from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo and previously worked in mechanical engineering at Signature Bioscience, Agilent Labs, and IBM.

Brandon Stafford, Principal Engineer

Brandon, the managing engineer in the Boston-area office, is a “renaissance man” and experienced engineering consultant.  Brandon holds both an MS in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University and a BA in English from Pomona College.  Prior to joining GreenMountain, he worked in embedded systems engineering, product design, and project management as a mechanical engineer at IDEO and electrical engineer at MindTribe Product Engineering and the Stanford Robotics Lab. Brandon has also converted a Porsche 914 to electric power, built a stove that can set wood alight in less than 10 seconds and taught a course on embedded systems for the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Max Davis, Principal Engineer and Solar Specialist

Max is a multidisciplinary engineer with experience in the solar, semiconductor, and display industries. Prior to joining GreenMountain he invented and developed new technologies at Kovio, a printed semiconductor startup, and at E Ink, an "electronic paper" startup, and holds several patents on this work. Prior to that, Max held a Lecturer appointment at MIT, developing and teaching new courses in physics and engineering. At GreenMountain Max acts as project manager and lead engineer on a range of technology development, machine design, and product development projects, primarily in the solar field. Max’s independent projects include designing technologies for the developing world and kinetic sculpture. Max holds a combined mechanical/electrical engineering degree and a range of top honors from MIT

Keith Gazda, Senior Engineer

Keith is an accomplished mechanical and process engineer who joined GreenMountain after spending five years at Symyx Technologies developing custom synthesis, screening, and analysis equipment for combinatorial materials discovery.  He worked extensively with automation, high temperature and high pressure reactors, measurement techniques, material handling, corrosive and hazardous environments, and systems integration at Symyx and with robotics and metal deposition systems at Applied Materials. Keith earned his undergraduate degree with high distinction in mechanical engineering from the University of Minnesota and his graduate degree from Stanford University.  In his spare time Keith is involved in the San Francisco chapter of Engineers Without Borders.

Brian Atchley, Senior Engineer

Brian lives for engineering; so much so that it can only be described as a crazed passion. At GreenMountain Brian designs and analyzes renewable energy products and equipment to meet our clients quality and performance requirements and specifications. His specialties include machine design, optics frame design, heat transfer, tool development, and framing problems to identify the risks that could sink a project. Before GreenMountain Brian worked on high-tech projects including laser beam designs and cameras for unmanned aerial vehicles. He was educated at California State University Chico where he was involved in electric, supermileage, and off-road vehicle projects. At home he designs stirling engines, electric bicycles, sun trackers, LED flashlights, and anything else he can manufacture in his personal workshop.

Tyler Williams, Senior Engineer

Tyler is a mechanical design engineer whose specialties include product and process design for the PV industry and structural and thermal systems analysis. His previous experience includes satellite mechanism development at the Space Sciences Lab, energy efficiency analysis at Bevilaqua Knight, and product and manufacturing development at ERG Materials and Aerospace. He has published conference papers on FEA modeling of PV manufacturing processes, hydrogen storage systems, and environmental lifecycle assessment of photovoltaic processes.Tyler received his Masters in mechanical engineering from UC Berkeley with High Honors. Independent projects he has pursued include contributing to the design of a high-efficiency stove for refugees in Darfur through Engineers Without Borders and designing ultralight backpacking equipment for his own use.

David Youmans, Senior Engineer

David is a mechanical design engineer who brings to the GreenMountain team an intuitive understanding of mechanical systems and creative approaches to difficult design problems. His experience spans a multitude of clean technology systems including biodiesel production, hydrogen storage, solar photovoltaic technologies and consumer medical devices with expertise in technology assessment, machine design, new product development, and design for manufacture. David received his BS in mechanical engineering from UC San Diego with an award for Highest Academic Achievement. He also co-founded the San Francisco professionals chapter of Engineers Without Borders-USA through which he has traveled twice to Tanzania and organized the Appropriate Technology Design Team, which has completed designs for stoves in Darfur and wind turbines in Guatemala.

R. David Hague, Vice President of Business Development

David joined GreenMountain in 2007 with over 15 years of experience in business development.  As the seventh employee at Immersion Corporation, a venture-funded startup turned NASDAQ traded company, he conceptualized and executed strategic business development initiatives resulting in mass adoption of a disruptive technology. At GreenMountain David applies his expertise to converting well engineered ideas into profits for clients and stakeholders.  David is a graduate of Santa Clara University where he studied engineering and renewable energy systems.  David recently partnered with the United Nations Development Program to design and install a sustainable PV-powered fresh water infrastructure serving the needs of La Playona, a rural island community off the coast of El Salvador, and is a member of Engineers Without Borders.

Rebecca Lipski, Director of Operations

Since joining the firm in 2005, Rebecca has been responsible for managing GreenMountain’s finance, facilities, HR, and IT operations. She has 15 years of experience in operations and office management for high-tech and professional services firms including zero-energy housing developers Clarum Homes, interior design firm Jane Antonacci & Associates, and e-mail security provider Disappearing, Inc. At GreenMountain, Rebecca keeps everything running smoothly, balancing the diverse needs of our clients and employees and ensuring open lines of communication. Her interests include theater, good fiction, good music, and biking around San Francisco.
