Robert MacDonald on Water Technologies
In January 2006, GreenMountain’s Jon Guice interviewed Bob MacDonald, a Silicon Valley entrepreneur, about his interest in water technologies. The following is a short excerpt:
Where do you think the biggest opportunities are for new technologies in this sector?
Membranes for various filtration steps are gaining steadily due to decreasing costs, increasing reliability, and the need to achieve more stringent treatment standards. Emerging applications for membranes include desalination, ultrafiltration for drinking water, and biofiltration for wastewater treatment.

Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy
Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy (TDLAS), from Zolo Technologies, sends a laser beam through an area and reads the composition of the air based on particle absorption. For example, an instrument designed for power generation boilers measures temperature, water vapor, oxygen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and ammonia inside a combustion chamber. Could your company use this technology if adapted to another purpose? We’d love to hear your ideas. Write to news@GreenMountainEngineering.com
